Why start you garlic from ‘Bulbits’ and what exactly IS a Bulbit?: A bulbit is an alternative to a garlic seed  When garlic is left to flower, the scape will either produce a seed or a bulbit. A bulbit looks like a tiny clove of garlic. The benefit of starting garlic from a bulbit is disease resistant in your future crops. When you start your garlic from a clove, as most of us do, diseases are planted right along with that clove. I’m almost all instances, garlic rust and other ailments are born from fungus and bacteria that are on the outside of the clove.  When you start you garlic from seed or bulbit, these ailments are nearly eliminated. It takes a bit longer to harvest. When you start from a bulbit, your first year will produce a ‘set’. This smaller, round single bulb of garlic that is comparable to an onion set. Your second year growth will produce a large, full, disease resistant bulb of garlic.

I selected this variety of garlic to grow this year because of its subtle, mellow flavor.

If you’ve never had fresh garlic (and most of us haven’t, unless you grow it yourself) you will really be surprised at the difference.

I can not bear the thought of eating store bought garlic from China. Mass produced and peeled by Inmates of prisons on China! I grow my own and have plenty left over to share.

Bon Appetite!
