Some history about OUR Black Walnut:
During the summer of 2020, it became apparent that we needed to down one of the large Black Walnut trees in our grove. This was a decision that wasn’t taken lightly.
It can take a minimum of 25 years for a black Walnut tree to begin producing fruit. The fruit of the Black Walnut tree is a natural and valuable commodity crop. ALL black walnuts that you find at your market were harvested by hand, from private land in the Missouri Ozarks. This tradition of harvesting black walnuts runs through many generations of Ozark families. Crops of natural and wild black walnuts have been a financial mainstay of Ozark families for many centuries.
With respect to keeping this tradition alive, when we purchased our homestead in the ozarks, we vowed to ALWAYS leave the existing black walnut grove, for our family and for future families. The trees in our grove are hundreds of years old. They were left untouched by the 3 families who owned our homestead land before us. We intend to see those trees all the way through their natural life spans.
Centuries of growth of the wooded acres that border our home, led to the need, for safety reasons, to down one of the larger walnut trees. The operation of downing this 100 year old tree was enormous. We knew from the moment that the decision to down that tree was final, that we would honor this tree.
Jason milled the tree in lumber, by hand, the old fashioned way. He’s used that lumber to craft a new table for our family to enjoy meals at home for generations to come. The deep longing to honor EVERY part of this tree, has led to crafting these knife holders with the planks leftover from the table.
Each knife holder is crafted by hand, the saw are visible, paying homage to old fashioned carpentry. Each plank is taken from the heart of the tree, this means the beautiful and signature black colored center, the ‘heart’ is present in every plank.
The planks are finished with one coat of clear varnish. If you’d prefer a shiny plank, they can be coated twice. The photos here show ONE coat of varnish.
The magnets used in the holders are EXTREMELY strong. They can hold ANY knife you place on them, quite securely. The holes created to mount your knife holder are covered with plugs of matching black walnut. A clean, flush design that will allow you to mount your knife holder securely.
If you have any questions or wish to have your knife holder made to spec, please contact me and we will make your dreams come true.
Thank you for helping us to further honor this great tree, and it’s long and wondrous history, by ensuring each and every plank has not only been used, but is turned into family heirlooms to br appreciated, honored and kept alive in many homes for many generations to come.
Honoring this mighty tree and it’s rich history in the ozarks means the world to us. Thank you for your interest in honoring the history and heritage of Ozark Black Walnut.
